Newman's city, with a fresh reason to visit
John Henry Newman founded the Birmingham Oratory in Edgbaston in 1849 and lived there for nearly forty years. Its church is now the national shrine to St John Henry Newman, and on 1 November 2025 Pope Leo XIV declared him a Doctor of the Church. For Catholic singles in Birmingham, that gives a local landmark new weight, and our page on Catholic dating picks up the theme.
Newman is only part of the story. Christian dating in Birmingham means meeting people from a city where many faiths live side by side, and where believers often have to be deliberate about finding each other.
Holding on to faith in a city of many faiths
Birmingham is one of England's most religiously mixed cities. The 2021 Census recorded 34.0% of residents as Christian and 29.9% as Muslim, two communities close in size. Back in 2001 the Christian share was 59.1%. The city has a long-established Black-led Pentecostal church scene.
That tradition runs deep. The New Testament Church of God congregation in Handsworth, begun in 1953, became one of the first two in the UK when the church was formally organised in 1955, and it is still one of Birmingham's biggest Black-led churches. Read our page on Black Christian dating if that is your church family.
The Christian singles you will meet here
Birmingham and the West Midlands: from our member records.
Our Birmingham members are a small, mostly female group, chiefly aged 35 to 54. The wider West Midlands adds members in Coventry and Dudley, so it pays to set your search to cover the region rather than the city boundary alone. Men of faith who are serious about a relationship will find women here.
Plan a gentle first date in Birmingham
- Meet at Pigeon Park. Locals' name for Cathedral Square, the green around St Philip's on Colmore Row. It is public and easy to find, and at lunchtime the benches are busy.
- Step inside St Philip's. Birmingham Cathedral since 1905, famous for four Edward Burne-Jones windows made by William Morris's firm. Burne-Jones was baptised in this church.
- Walk the canals. Head to Brindleyplace and Gas Street Basin. Birmingham has 35 miles of canal within the city, more than Venice, and towpaths make easy conversation.
- Or choose the Botanical Gardens. Fifteen acres in Edgbaston, four Victorian glasshouses and a tearoom, intact since 1829.
Two more churches worth knowing
St Chad's Cathedral was designed by Augustus Pugin and consecrated in 1841, the first Catholic cathedral built in England after the Reformation.
St Martin in the Bull Ring is the city's historic parish church. Its Burne-Jones and Morris window of 1875 was the only one to survive a bombing raid in 1941, because it had been boxed up for safekeeping that very day.
Whichever of these feels like home, mention it on your profile. A shared church, or a shared love of an old building, is a natural first message. Our first Christian date tips help with what comes next.
