A capital with every kind of church
Christian dating in London starts with a happy problem: choice. In a single Sunday the city's worship runs from Wren's great cathedral to a Byzantine-style Catholic cathedral in Victoria, Hillsong's Sunday services in the Dominion Theatre and the Knightsbridge parish where Alpha began. Single Christians in London can belong to very different church families and still share the same hope.
That variety is not new. The London Church Census, published in 2013 using 2012 figures, found Sunday attendance in the capital rose 16% between 2005 and 2012, to about 720,000. Two new churches opened every week over that period, two thirds of them Pentecostal Black-majority churches, and nearly half of churchgoers in inner London were Black. In the 2021 Census, 40.7% of Londoners described themselves as Christian, and the Office for National Statistics calls London the most religiously diverse region of England.

Churches across London

- Holy Trinity Brompton, Knightsbridge. The Church of England parish where the Alpha course began in 1977 under curate Charles Marnham, later led by Nicky Gumbel from 1990.
- All Souls Langham Place. The evangelical Anglican church beside the BBC near Oxford Circus, known as John Stott's church; he served there as curate and rector.
- St Paul's Cathedral. Christopher Wren's masterpiece, completed in 1710 after the Great Fire. Its Christmas carol services are free but ticketed.
- Westminster Cathedral, Victoria. The largest Catholic church in England and Wales, built in Byzantine style between 1895 and 1903.
- Kensington Temple, Notting Hill Gate. Flagship church of the Elim Pentecostal movement, opened in 1931.
- Hillsong Central London. Sunday services at the Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road since 2005.
- Jesus House, Brent Cross. The main London church of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, founded in 1994.
- KICC. Kingsway International Christian Centre, founded in London in 1992 and often described as Britain's biggest Pentecostal church, with a site in Walthamstow.

Two easy first dates in central London
Café in the Crypt, St Martin-in-the-Fields. Right on Trafalgar Square, under the church's 18th-century brick vaults. It is busy, public and central, so neither of you has far to travel, and a church crypt makes for an easy opening line.
Queen Mary's Gardens, Regent's Park. London's largest collection of roses, around 12,000 of them, in one of the Royal Parks. A slow walk here gives you room to talk without staring at each other across a table.
